As I listen to the Democratic Party spokesgirls engage in one clever circumlocution after another – here, for instance, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz slimes around on the subject of the Ryan Medicare plan and its effect on those 55 years and older, and here Stephanie Cutter brushes off Joe Biden’s slave chains remark – I am reminded of a joke we used to tell behind the Iron Curtain.

During the Q&A part of a Party meeting, one single solitary courageous soul from the State Planning Bureau raises his hand.  “Comrade Chairman,” he says, “I have read production reports that our economy is not producing enough beds.  How come?”

There is a deathly silence, then the chairman clears his throat and says: “Comrade, let’s look at this is a progressive, rational way.  First of all, the Party and the proletariat are forever vigilant.  Second, the intelligentsia is resting on its laurels.  And finally, the class enemy never sleeps.  So why do we need more beds?”

Cleverness and a “way with words,” however impressive, are no substitute for substance, and most certainly not for wisdom.  In my view, the Democratic Party should retire and gag these two birds (and many more besides, of either gender) before they do the Party irreparable harm.

By the way, in the movie Jurassic Park, the intrepid wild game specialist Robert Muldoon says: “Clever girl!” just as he is surprised and killed by one of the velociraptors.

Not sure why, but it somehow seemed appropriate to mention that…
