Barack Obama famously informed us in his inaugural address us that He will restore science to its rightful place.  Three and a half years later, we know exactly what that means: perversion of science for political ends, the foremost among these being dictatorial powers for his executive branch.  And, as the thousands of documents released in Climategate and various other AGW-related “gates” show, scientists corrupted by government largesse are only too willing to collaborate.

This is just the sort of thing Eisenhower spoke off in his farewell address.  “We must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger,” he said, “that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.”

(They say that capitalism breeds greed.  Trust me, you ain’t seen real greed until you’ve lived under socialism.  But that’s a different story.)

Unfortunately, Obama isn’t the only post-modern apparatchik hyperenlightened leader in the world.  The United Nations is demanding huge amounts of “carbon squeeze” to be able to keep their legions of apparatchiki happily sleeping in their feathered beds and endlessly conferencing in five-star resorts.  The putzes over at the European Reich, likewise blinded by climate “science” that subsists almost exclusively on government largesse, have just decided to impose a carbon tax on all aircraft entering European airspace.  Of note, China and India have already forbidden their airlines to pay this anti-scientific squeeze, and U.S. airlines are begging the Obama administration to weigh in against it.  Fat chance, I say…

One of the big movers and shakers in the field of government-owned science is Australia’s current Prime Ministress, Julia Dillard.  (Not surprisingly, she has a special relationship with Barack Obama.)  Her government has just decided to set up a panel, the New Media Council, to censor any scientific work that dares to operate freely, i.e. without review by government-approved corruptocrats.

But there is hope.  Private researchers like Anthony Watts – just the the kind of “subversive” that Australia’s proposed New Media Council would suppress – have been working for years to put science on its feet again.  Largely thanks to these unfunded researchers, climate science has been showed up as ideologically driven bunk and its alarmist pronouncement as fraudulent, and informed citizenry is no longer as spooked as they were just a few years back.  Also, NASA, long the private playground of climate corruptocrat James Hansen, is aboil.  Scores of NASA scientists and astronauts have launched a revolt, complaining that the agency’s reputation (and their own) has been seriously damaged by the volumes of scientific nonsense that the agency has been forced to spew over the past two decades.  And in Australia, revolt is brewing as well, and Obama “special friend” Julia Dillard may soon be toast.

Question is: has the informed citizenry of the world awakened on time, or is it too late?  Will we remain a free people, or will the world, to quote Winston Churchill, “sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age, made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science?”

Only time will tell; but firing Dillard and Obama, followed by really restoring science to its rightful place, will be a major step in the right direction.
