Heads would roll, for sure. (And I mean literally.)
Vicar Glynn Cardy, who practices his priestly tradecraft at St. Matthews’ Church in Auckland, New Zealand, surprised his parishioners this Christmas season by putting up a billboard that shows a shocked Virgin Mary looking at the results of a pregnancy test. (h/t iDNES, from The Telegraph). To add insult to injury, the church website has a caption competition. (The most trenchant comment to date: “If I say I’m a virgin, mum and dad won’t kill me.”) The billboard has all Christians in New Zealand, regardless of denomination, in a state of boil.
Jew or no Jew, I can’t say that I blame them. This is just plain stupid. Cardy claims that the billboard is intended to alert people to the plight of single pregnant women, but I have a funny feeling that the world (the Western world, anyway) is absolutely saturated with this knowledge already – and has been, for a generation.
Wait, a brainstorm! How ’bout if the irreverent reverend put up a billboard highlighting the plight of the long-suffering (and all-too frequently murdered) Copts in Egypt? Now there’s a statement to make, especially now, under the emerging Islamic terror-state in that unhappy land.
That could actually require some moral courage.
