They were rugged, dependable, technologically advanced, and they even survived the “double whammy” of Nazism and Communism. Though Tatra ceased making passenger cars some time ago, Tatra trucks, with their legendary ruggedness, are still going strong.

Good info and various links can be found at the unofficial pages for Tatra cars and Tatra trucks.

My favorite models are the streamliners, particularly the T-87, with an air-cooled, 3-liter OHC V-8 installed behind the rear axle.  And yes, with hemi heads!

Here’s a good book, if you happen to read Czech.

And if you don’t, pick up a copy of the April, 1987 Road & Track Magazine for a rundown on the awesome T-87!

  1. I have seen some TATRAs in Finland on sixties. A most interesting car! Today the only family model with rear engine is the small RENAULT, I think. But TATRA – excellent!

    • When Tatra stopped making passenger cars, it was truly the end of an era. I heard, though, that they may start making copies of some of their “old” models, but with contemporary equipment. I hope it’s true!
